Grand Days Out at Whistlebare

(2 customer reviews)

We are delighted to invite you to join us, and one of our brilliant guest tutors for a Grand Day out at Whistlebare. These days are all about learning a new skill, as well as, of course, visiting the farm, lashings of cake, yarn and lots of lovely knitting time.

In the last few years at Whistlebare we have converted a barn next to the farmhouse into a beautiful new hall, with views across the fields down to Holy Island and the sea.  We are very excited that in  2020 Steve Malcolm aka Mr Hugzz, Maddie Harvey  and Lindsay Roberts have all agreed to come and be part of our Grand Days Out and very much hope that you will want to join us too.

We are very proud of our livestock husbandry and the environmental care we take of our land and we know that our customers care about this too.  So, as well as learning exciting new skills with our guest tutors we are offering to show you all around Whistlebare and introduce you to our goats, sheep, pigs and chickens.

We will also feed you regularly on home baked cake with cups of tea and coffee. Lunch is also home made and is from local produce. All diets can be catered for but please let us know in advance.

We have had a number of enquiries about getting to Whistlebare and it is true we are in a very rural area.  We are however, close to the main East Coast Line. Our local station is Berwick-Upon-Tweed which is 40 minutes from both Newcastle and Edinburgh stations and we are going to provide a bus service from and to Berwick station. Please let us know if you are interested in travelling by Whistlebare Bus!

Please scroll down for a full description of the different workshops each tutor is offering.

Steve Malcolm aka Mr Hugzz

Join Steve Malcolm (@MrHugzzz)  in untangling the world of cables.  He has over 20 years experience in the art of knitting and a passion for cables.

After this Grand Day out you’ll realise that cables are not as mysterious as they appear, and you’ll have the confidence (and ability) to not only knit them up easily, you’ll be able to modify existing ones and be able to create your own!

In this workshop you’ll learn how to: knit cables with AND without a cable needle,

read charts (especially for cables), modify existing cables, place cables in your patterns, learn the difference between cables, traveling cables, and braids, as well

count rows between cable crosses without using stitch markers. All this and more!

This class is interactive and you will get the opportunity to create your own cables in class where you will also be able to get assistance as required and ask questions relating to the topic.

Steve is designing a cable jersey for Whistlebare and as well the untangling cables class he will be teaching you how to knit the very special cables on it.

Steve is teaching at Whistlebare on Saturday  9th May.

Maddie Harvey

Maddie is a freelance designer and knitting teacher who creates bold and simple knitwear designs inspired by colour and geometry.

In the morning Maddie will be teaching a choose colour workshop, this is a playful class where we will experiment with colour and texture to create colourful working swatches.
This will be followed by a project workshop based on the wonderful Bamburgh Shawl Maddie has designed for us using a combination of our Yeavering Bell 4ply and our Cheviot Marsh 4 ply.

Lots of oddments of Yeavering Bell and Cheviot Marsh Yarn will be on hand for Maddie’s colour class and a full skein of Yeavering Bell and of Cheviot Marsh are included for your shawl.

Maddie will be joining us on Saturday 6th July.

Lindsay Roberts

Lindsay will be teaching the gentle art of mindful stitching in this Grand Day Out at Whistlebare. Using our very own Yeavering Bell yarns you will learn to explore making marks and designs using only the simplest stitches which will enable you to focus of the feel of the soft wool in your hands, the movement of the needle and the patterns you create. We’re really looking forward to this calming and relaxing workshop focusing on the restorative effects of creativity.

All materials will be provided.

Lindsay is joining us at Whistlebare on Saturday 12th October.
