Cuthbert’s Sock (full skein)
Whistlebare’s own sock yarn, 80% mohair and 20% Wensleydale from our own goats and sheep, tightly twisted for hard working feet.
Mohair is the perfect fibre for socks. It has the highest rub test of any natural fibre so you don’t need nylon. Nothing is better for keeping cold feet warm and hot feet cool than natural fibres. Mohair and Wensleydale are very lustrous and smooth, meaning bacteria can’t get hold and so there is no smell! All round the perfect blend for active feet.
Cuthbert’s sock is sold in 300m skeins, which are the equivalent of about 130g. 300m is enough for a pair of socks. We made Cuthbert’s Sock slightly heavier than the average sock yarn as we wanted the perfect socks for wearing out of doors, hiking, farming, gardening, enjoying ourselves.
Remember all our patterns are FREE with the yarn to knit them. If you would like a pattern then please order it and its yarn though the ‘sock designs‘ pages.
Hand dyed on the farm in small batches of 10 skeins. Scroll down to see colour swatches.

I bought myself a skein of Cuthbert’s sock as a birthday present last year and just got around to using it, this yarn has made the most comfortable pair of socks I have ever worn!

Visited your workroom in the summer when on holiday in Northumbria (and have purchased mail order since) and bought a skein of sock wool on impulse. I’d never made socks before and a friend loaned me a very simple pattern and voila! A beautiful pair of lime green socks. They are so comfortable and very warm. And being what they are, they don’t get smelly so I can make them wear two days. One little disaster – they got caught up in a 30 degree wash and at first I thought I had destroyed them as they looked very felty, but once I’d stretched them a bit they fitted fine. I’m only putting this in to prove to others thinking of buying, that they are indestructible!

I’ve been wearing my Cuthbert Socks for several months now. They have moulded to my feet very comfortably and can certainly be worn for several days without needing a wash, they really truly don’t smell!

Hi Christine, our Cuthbert’s sock is definitely suitable for cowls and scarves, it knits up like a DK yarn.
