Some birds are admired for their majesty; for their silent grace, their keen eyes, their cool regard for both man and beast. They perch proudly on royal crests. They are a falconer’s dream. They are definitely not puffins. But that’s just the thing, isn’t it? The puffin charms because it disarms.

Every landing is a crash landing they seem stunned to have actually survived, followed by them immediately trying to play it cool. The yellow corners of their mouth give the impression of an awkward half-smile. And the plumage around those big, soulful eyes makes them look like they’re perpetually in the midst of comforting a friend.

They have such a cheerful frankness about them, it comes as no surprise that they’ve been so lovingly adopted as an emblem of Northumberland.

Our ‘Feeling Farne Jersey’ is loosely based on TinCan Knits ‘Strange Brew’ (with their kind permission) to which Claire has added her gorgeous puffin motif and colour work borders.
