Sugarshawl by Julia Wilkens

Sugarshawl is a dramatic knit designed by Julia Wilkens that uses brioche and slipped stitch techniques to create fabuous bobbles/popcorn stitches, as well as gorgeous stripes.

Julia says

“You might not see it but my Sugarshawl is actually stripes throughout (I LOVE STRIPES). You are knitting one color at a time. Yes, also during the dotted section. That makes the pattern a really easy knit, suitable even for a fairly new knitter. Bonus is that you get a really cool effect which looks like its pretty complicated 😉. “

Born out of playing around with slip stitches, each color is knit separately and the bubble wrap texture is simply accomplished by stacking slipped stitches. It’s easy and if I may say so very addictive.”

To get all focus on texture and color I kept the shape pretty simple, straight forward. It’s has a very logical symmetry, which makes it great to wear around your neck. The shawl is knit sideways, starting with the garter ridge part.

The shawl has a central bobble section, framed by two super texturized wings that make the shawl an engaging knit and beautiful design accessory, with a pleasing combination of stitch definition and colour play. Using two skeins of 4ply for the main colour and one skein each of two contrasting colours you will achieve a gorgeous and dramatic shawl, and learn some new techniques.  There is a video of the bobble stitch available.
